How to Reach the Sundarbans from Kolkata

Roads, trains, and jetties into the Indian Sundarbans — Godkhali, Canning, Namkhana, and what happens after you leave Kolkata.

Kolkata trips follow one story. Leave the city, reach a jetty, cross water to a gateway island, then board a licensed forest boat on permit days. The forest is not a roadside attraction. It begins where the embankments end and the tide takes over.

Canning and Godkhali (eastern corridor)

Local trains run from Sealdah to Canning throughout the day. From Canning, taxis and package vans continue toward Godkhali, the familiar embarkation point for eastern packages. A direct car from Kolkata to Godkhali skips the train but not the traffic.

Driving routes vary — via Malancha and Sonakhali, through Baruipur and Canning, or other village roads — all landing at the same mud jetty world. See the route table and maps on tour packages from Kolkata and tour guidelines.

Other gateways

Place When it helps
Sonakhali Alternate ferry links toward Gosaba
Gosaba Stay on island, ferry from Godkhali
Dayapur / Pakhiralay Lodge clusters after the first ferry hop
Namkhana / Fraserganj Western approach, Chembri ferry on some routes
Jharkhali Buffer gateway with rescue centre and different jetty rhythm

Major rivers on maps include Muriganga, Matla, Thakuran, Raimangal, and Haribhanga on the eastern edge. You do not need to memorise them. You do need the jetty name on your voucher.

Before the boat

Keep ID originals ready. Confirm embarkation point and engine time with your operator. Winter weekends punish late departures. After Godkhali, travel is boat-only into STR beats — there is no jeep loop.

Frequently asked questions

How far is the Sundarbans from Kolkata?
Godkhali jetty is roughly 88–110 km by road from much of Kolkata depending on the route, often about three hours in light traffic and longer on winter weekends. After the jetty you still need boat time to Gosaba, Dayapur, or forest camps.
Can I take a train part of the way?
Yes. Sealdah to Canning locals are frequent. Package tours usually send a van for the Canning–Godkhali leg. Confirm whether your fare includes that transfer.
How many islands are in the Indian Sundarbans?
Reserve planning materials describe on the order of 102 islands in the Indian delta, with about half inhabited and the rest largely mangrove. Villages sit behind mud embankments; tourism lodges cluster on gateway islands such as Gosaba and Dayapur.
